A six-step routine
Write down your buyers' words
List the problems your product solves in the words customers use: “need more sales”, “looking for a tool to…”, “alternative to [competitor]”, “any recommendations for…”. These phrases become your searches.
Pick a few communities and searches
Choose 5 to 10 subreddits where your buyers ask for help (for example r/shopify, r/ecommerce, r/SaaS, r/startups) and a handful of X searches such as "looking for" (app OR tool) plus your category, or "alternative to" plus a competitor's name.
Read new posts every day
Sort by new, not top. Buying questions get answered within hours, so a daily pass matters more than a deep one. Save the posts worth answering.
Score buying intent
Strong signals: asking for a recommendation or alternative, describing the exact pain you solve, mentioning budget, a deadline or a tool they are leaving. Weak signals: general discussion, memes, news.
Reply like a helpful expert
Answer the question first in a few sentences. Mention your product only if it genuinely fits, say that you work on it, and follow each subreddit's self-promotion rules. Never post the same reply twice.
Track what turns into customers
Note which communities, phrases and reply styles lead to sign-ups, then spend more time there. Drop communities that never convert.
What gets accounts banned?
- Posting the same message or link in many threads.
- Replying to posts that aren't asking for help, just because a keyword matched.
- Hiding that you work on the product you recommend.
- Ignoring a subreddit's rules on self-promotion.
- Automated posting. Keep a human in the loop for every public reply.
How GrowthHeron helps
GrowthHeron's Reddit & X buyer leads feature does the daily reading for you: it scans the subreddits, searches and accounts you choose at a human pace, scores every post for buying intent and drafts a reply in your voice. Nothing is posted until you approve it. It is one of seven jobs the agent handles; see how it compares to an agency.
